Study: Banning Same-Sex Marriage Increases U.S. HIV Infection Rate

In a new study conducted by economists at Emory University, it has been found that banning same-sex marriage raises the U.S. HIV infection rate by four cases per 100,000 people. Using data from the General Social Survey, a popular research tool that has gauged American public opinion for over four decades, Hugo Mialon and co-researcher Andrew Francis found that a widespread increase in tolerance for homosexuality between the 1970s and the 1990s resulted in a decrease of one HIV infection per 100,000 people. Recent controversy over the issue of same-sex marriage has led to a new culture of intolerance say the researchers, which, in turn, leads to riskier sexual behavior. “Intolerance is deadly,” said Mialon, assistant professor of economics at Emory. “Bans on gay marriage codify intolerance, causing more gay people to shift to underground sexual behaviors that carry more risk.” Mialon continues, "We found the effects of tolerance for gays on HIV to be statistically significant and robust – they hold up under a range of empirical models." Francis adds, “Laws on gay marriage are in flux and under debate. It’s a hot issue, and we are hoping that policymakers will take our findings into account.” Between the economic incentives and now a potential decrease in the HIV infection rate, granting gays and lesbians the right to marry seems a no brainer. You can read the full text of the study here.

wrong a bout same sex marriage

HIV and aides spread through the homo community it would stand to reason if homo's stop having sewer sex's there would be a great decrease in this decease.
Letting them defile marriage isn't the answer.
Just stop the queer sex's and live.

Wow, jim

Wow, what a thoughtful, well-written, cogent argument. (I'm joking, of course.)

If you can't even spell "AIDS," you're not worth arguing with.

Wow.

You should probably stop having sex to stop the spread of stupid.

haha

Yea, just let 'us queers' die off too right?

haha. wait til' your sons gay.

Just like he wont choose to be a boy, hes not going to choose if hes gay or straight.

Homosexuality has been shown in all types of animals- i guess they 'chose' that also. Get over yourselves.

Get with the program people, its 2009.

Oh, Jimmy-Jim-Jim. I love a

Oh, Jimmy-Jim-Jim. I love a good laugh. Thanks for making me feel better about myself.
PS - You're a moron.

I haven't yet seen a

I haven't yet seen a "homosexual" who wasn't starved for attention.

Right on!

I haven't yet come across a right wing lunatic that is worth the attention.

woah jim, you're completely

woah jim, you're completely and totally stupid. first of all, what's aides? if you can't even spell the acronym, please don't try to preach about it. maybe if you did some research (or some reading in general), you'd know that AIDS isn't a gay problem - it's a worldwide problem that affects many people from countless backgrounds. it's almost as much of a problem as having idiots such as yourself on this planet. please die now. seriously. kill yourself.

oh wait, i forgot...

i'm sorry jim, i forgot to say please.

please PLEASE kill yourself. thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Why would you tell Jim to

Why would you tell Jim to kill himself?
That's equally if not more hateful than what he said about homosexuals.

Today AIDS is a bigger heterosexual problem than homosexual.
I'm not worried about the position of people like Jim because it's only a matter of time before homosexuals earn the right they deserve.

No, no, no

There is really big a difference between being hateful towards one person, and being hateful towards a whole entire group of people. What she said wasn't nearly as hateful as what Jim said. We don't need people like Jim here anyway. He's just slowing down our evolution.

thank you jim!

you have further proved the ignorance of those who oppose anything different than what they are. i was initially repulsed by your comment, by i see many others are just as disgusted which just gives me hope that one day our government will open its eyes and see how unconstitutional there discrimination truly is while society opens its heart to those of alternative orientation

Being homosexual is genetic,

Being homosexual is genetic, people don't choose to be gay, they were born that way. You are an ignorant fool, not only gay people get the "aides decease", legalizing same sex marriages won't stop Aids, wearing a fucking condom will. Why don't we just have the government able to impose legalized forced abortions for people with I.Q.'s as low as yours? It's not as great when the governments not on your side.

post on HIV

I've worked in the HIV/AIDS field since the 80's, first as a volunteer and for the past 10 in outreach and case management. HIV infection is an equal opportunity disease. It matters not if you are gay, bisexual, straight, transgendered; it matters not what race or ethnicity; it matters not your level of education, the size of your home, your neighborhood, your degrees, titles, cars or the clothes you wear. It is true that some behaviors are higher risk than others: IV drug use, especially with shared needles, unprotected sex of any kind. That includes anal sex between men as well as anal sex between men and women. It includes unprotected vaginal sex and other sexual behaviors. It can include transmission from mother to child. It can include a bad blood transfusion. Alcohol, crack, other drugs also lead to a higher risk of infection because drug/alcohol use leads to riskier behaviors. Most people who have tested HIV positive live, work, think, breathe, love, struggle, laugh, cry, grieve, garden, cheer sports teams, and everything else everyone else does. HIV is NOT only for people who are not married or in a committed relationship; it can affect anyone who engages in risky behavior. HIV rates among straight men and women are rising. So don't think for minute you won't get it because you don't happen to be gay.

HIV infection is a disease, a medical problem. It is NOT a moral issue at all. HIV/AIDS stigma hurts the people who have the infection as well as those who love them. I've know thousands of people with HIV from every race, ethnic group, religion, country of origin, economic/social class. I have yet to meet even ONE person who did not "deserve" my respect as a fellow human being, I have yet to meet ONE person who didn't have value as a fellow human being. I HAVE met thousands who are creative, survivors, gutsy, intelligent, funny, hard working, determined and loving, in spite of all the utter crap and bull shit that gets thrown their way.

HIV is a virus. A cold is also a virus. If you don't condemn the person in your home or office or school for getting a cold and passing it on to you, then why condemn someone who is fighting a much tougher virus? Would you treat someone with cancer that way? With obesity? A smoker? An auto worker or wealthy banker? People HAVE HIV infection. But that is not even close to WHO they are as human beings.

We all have an HIV STATUS: You are blessed if your current status is HIV NEGATIVE. Stay safe, don't do stupid, risky stuff --
and find a little compassion for those who struggle with HIV. They deserve it. I know!

Go home, deal with your homophobia and cut the crap. You might just be surprised to find out just how wonderful people can be, however they define their sexual orientation, whether or not they have HIV infection and whether or not you believe you are so righteous as to judge.

Best wishes,
an Aids advocate

Beautifully written

Thank you, AIDS advocate, for writing that beautiful piece of literature. You have expressed the exact way we should all feel about people infected with HIV. As I examine my own feelings, I see that I have a little way to go to get to where you are, but your clear text has helped me better understand.

hell yeah

The comment above mine is the most inspirational thing ive ever read on HIV/AIDS. It feels good to know, amongst all the stupid dumbasses in the world, there ARE compassionate, intelligent people.

Better Than Ted has improved

Better Than Ted has improved so much since it's pilot, which wasn't even that bad, just par. The problem with ABC comedies is the network fails to commit to any of them, so why should viewers? (aside from According to Jim for some god awful rea$on.)

Enough is enough

I was working with HIV positive for several years. They were absolutely normal people, like all of us. The only particular thing was that they were dealing with a different situation.

I've never heard about a virus who discriminates anybody. Viruses are blind judgement beings. They just follow their rules. Those rules, about HIV, are clear since a long time ago, but it seems that most humans are too busy making judgements, so they don't have time to read the information about how the HIV works and how to prevent its transmission.

I'm tired of this homo-hetero fight. The real fight is about making people understand the most simple thing: it is not about how much or less you do, it's about how you do it.

Most of those who judge HIV positive haven't even had a test themselves. If you are not virgin, then, go for it. As much as you wait to have the results, as much as you are putting yourself and the rest at risk.

The real disease around this is SOCIAL AIDS. That stupid way people behave with those courageous enough to check themselves through an HIV test.
The biggest obstacle is the religion issue that forbids people to have safer sex.
Goverments that spends lots of money on taking care of those who get it but don't spend it on prevention campaings. Use condoms!!!!!!!!!!!
The horrible thing is that there is still people carrying it and spreading it and not facing the fact of having a test, because they are not gay or drug users.
The unbelieveable thing is that there is still people who have no idea about how this virus works. Why? Because they don't read.

You don't want to be kind to those who already have it? Fair enough. Then, make an effort to be kind to yourself. Do the test. Face your HIV status. And, the most important point, treat every single person as if they were HIV+, and do so with yourself, and explain to the others why: the most beautiful way of showing your love to the one you've got in front of you is having great, wonderful, fantastic and safer sex.

Stop feeling different. We are all the same for HIV.

Sorry about any mistake on the comment. English is not my mother tongue.

Strange study

This is a satanic study with strange findings
