'Gay' School Assembly with Elton John Songs Outrages Parents

In honor of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia in May, Bromstone Primary in Broadstairs, Kent, UK, held an assembly for its students on the topic of bullying, which included a section on homophobia. As part of the presentation to the elementary school students, songs by Elton John were played. Some parents have expressed outrage over the assembly, saying that their children were left "confused" and "worried" by the information they received. Parent Gemma Martin said, "An Elton John song was played and the kids were told that Elton John was gay, and what that meant." Martin also said that the information about homosexuality has scared a number of the little girls and led them to question their friendships with other girls. "Little girls often cuddle each other if one of them is crying or has fallen over, and now they are afraid to do that in case the others think they are gay," she said. When the outraged parents tried to lodge complaints with the school, they claim they were branded 'homophobic' by school officials. Headmaster Nigel Utton claims that most parents have had been very positive about the way the school handled the difficult topic. That said, being subjected to Elton John songs could, indeed, reduce one to tears and might, in some quarters, be considered bullying.

Two things...

Is Elton John's singing a reason to "go gay," and doesn't this amount to the same thing as christians forcing their religious beliefs on other people who didn't ask for it?

Get real -- Elton John's

Get real -- Elton John's singing doesn't make anybody "go gay." Go crazy, maybe. Go deaf, depending on how loud you listen to it. Get nauseated, almost certainly. But not "go gay."

Elton John

Give Elton a break. First, he didn't ask for his songs to be played. Second, he's married his long-time partner and they appear quite happy, has helped the AIDS community tremendously, and appears to be an excellent role model. Third, "Your Song" remains a beautiful ballad. I guess it's just fun throwing stones at someone of another generation. If you don't like like his music, don't listen to it. That's pretty simple.

The headmaster told them they were homophobic?

Kudos to him. He was right

Homosexuals exist. Homosexual kids go through hell. Acknowledging that homosexuals exist and that you shouldn't treat homosexuals any worse than you would any other people (i.e. don't bully them)

People who object to that are homophobic - aptly named

Epic Fail!

If little girls are afraid of comforting their friends because they may be gay, then this homophobia training clearly failed.

One day isn't enough

No surprises that a half hearted one day on gayness is doomed to failure- more political correctness which as always engenders the exact opposite of what is supposedly being aimed for. Diversity and tolerance subjects need to be taught gradually.
