Maine Becomes Fifth State to Legalize Gay Marriage

Maine State SealThe Associated Press reports that Maine's governor John Baldacci has signed into law a bill that legalizes gay marriage, making the Pine Tree State the fifth U.S. state and the fourth one in New England to allow gays and lesbians to marry. Baldacci had not previously indicated which way he would go on the issue. The Senate voted 21-13, with one absent, for the bill, which had handily passed the House on Tuesday.

The next state to watch on the same-sex marriage front is New Hampshire. Lawmakers in the House are set to vote on it today and send it to Gov. John Lynch for signing. The governor, a Democrat, has not indicated which way he will go on the issue. If New Hampshire legalizes gay marriage, Rhode Island will be the only state in New England holding out on the issue.

Looks like New England could become the perfect honeymoon destination for anybody who wants to walk down the aisle.

Marriage rights for all

It amazes me that while equality is breaking out all over New England, the California courts are still procrastinating and haven't kicked out Prop 8 yet. They did it once. Perhaps they'll wake up again and get with it too. Less liberty and equality for some diminishes each one of us.
