San Francisco – This year's Gayvn Awards show took the Castro Theatre by the short and curlies with a very hot jailbird theme and sexy self-proclaimed Gaysian host, Alec Mapa. The annual event honors adult film stars, directors, and producers, as well as activists and personalities representing the gay community.
This year’s Gayvn Awards were presented just two days before Folsom Street Fair, in conjunction with Folsom Street Events, as part of San Francisco Leather Week. Convenient for those visiting San Francisco for one or the other! The award show’s prison theme even fits snugly with this year’s Folsom “line-up” posters. Tight-bodied dancers clad in orange jump suits and strong-armed “officers” provided on-stage entertainment highlighting the theme of the weekend.
You can see much of the evenings' festivities in this very sexy video by Mark Kliem of the Lavender Lounge, who has graciously allowed us to show off his work:
Gay adult video on-demand leader, Naked Sword, sponsored and presented the 2010 Gayvn Awards show along with a number of other Leather Week events. Even though the economic downturn has been hard on the adult industry, the AVN Media Network and sponsors Naked Sword, Folsom Street Events, CCbill, Cam4freewebcams, Gay Cities and Cybersocket.com made this year's event happen in style. The red carpet, held on the second floor of the Castro Theatre, sizzled with excitement as revered Sister ROMA! of San Francisco's beloved civic order the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence interviewed big names in the gay adult industry. Video and still cameras flashed throughout the theater, capturing images of scantily clad men and fabulous drag queens. Showtime covered the award ceremony from cameras both on and off the main stage. Industry leaders including Matthew Rush, Chi Chi LaRue (AKA director Larry David Paciotti), and NakedSword’s founder Tim Valenti presented awards alongside porn stars like Steven Daigle, (dressed only in boots and a cowboy hat!), and Tony Buff, dressed as an inmate. Comedian and host Alec Mapa held mini interviews and performed a skit mocking a cliché porn script.
The show also featured the regular line-up of awards for both DVD and web releases, the full list of which can be seen at the bottom of the page. Best Actor went to the fabulously tattooed Logan McCree for his performance in Raging Stallion Studios’s Sci-Fi feature The Visitor. Best Alternative Release went to Lucas Entertainment’s (no, not that Lucas!) Men In Stockings. The award for best director was split in a tie between Chris Ward, Ben Leon and Tony DiMarco for Raging Stallion Studios’s Focus/ReFocus ( a high-concepty story with luscious kissing, among other things) and Joe Gage for D/G Mutual Media’s intergenerational Dad Takes a Fishing Trip. The second of the two earned a giggle from the audience at each of its many nominations.
There were three new categories added to this year’s ceremony. Best Fetish Release went to Hot House’s switchy, kinky Skuff 4, and Best Amateur/Pro-Am Release went to Prodigy Productions/Dirty Bird Pictures’ Brent Corrigan’s Big Easy. (Baby-faced bubble-butt Corrigan bears an uncanny resemblance to TrueBlood actor Marshall Allman, who plays Tommy Mickens!) Much to the delight of the audience, who seemed particularly excited by every mention of the 3D film, Whorrey Potter and the Sorcerer’s Balls (Dominic Ford Features), already awarded the Grabby for Best Comedy back in June, took home the first award for Best Sex Comedy. Gayvn Personality of the Year award went to Sister Roma at the end of the evening after the judges tallied audience member votes.
Entertaining short clips aired throughout the night in which contestants Chi Chi LaRue, Jason Sechrest, and Sister Roma each demanded the award—Chi Chi LaRue proclaiming her stardom and Sister Roma threatening viewers. The presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award was the most touching, and interesting, part of the event. Pat Rocco, the director of the first gay pornographic film in an American theater (1968), won this award for his contribution to the adult entertainment industry but was also recognized for his work as documentarian, political activist, and advocate for homeless teens. At this point, Rocco and others expressed admiration and support for the Gayvn awards themselves as a landmark for the state of the industry.
