Vagina Dentata: The New Anti-Rape Condom with Teeth (NSFW)
A South African doctor has launched a new kind of condom as a defense against rape. Developed by Dr. Sonnet Ehlers over four decades of research and product development, the Rape-aXe (left) is a latex sheath outfitted with razor-sharp barbs or teeth. The device is inserted into the vagina like a tampon. When a man penetrates a woman who is wearing a Rape-aXe, the barbs attach to his penis and cause great pain but without breaking the skin. Once the condom is attached to the man's penis, it can only be removed surgically. Until it is removed, he will also be unable to urinate. Additional NSFW images of the device are displayed after the jump.
Dr. Ehlers said she developed this device after meeting a rape victim who had been devastated by her attack. She told Anderson Cooper of CNN:
"She looked at me and said, 'If only I had teeth down there,'" recalled Ehlers, who was a 20-year-old medical researcher at the time. "I promised her I'd do something to help people like her one day."

Ehlers insists that the device will not only help deter rape but will also be instrumental in catching rapists because of the need to have the Rape-aXe removed by professionals. Furthermore, the condom will also help prevent unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Ehlers suggests that women who use her product should choose when and how to use it.
"The ideal situation would be for a woman to wear this when she's going out on some kind of blind date ... or to an area she's not comfortable with," Ehlers added.

The anti-rape condom is currently undergoing a trial period in South Africa, where it is being distributed during the World Cup festivities. Once the trial period is over, the Rape-aXe will be available on the market for £1.50 ($2.20).
The Rape-aXe is not without its critics and controversy. Some believe that the device will only incite more violence against women; an enraged man caught in the device and in great pain might easily further victimize or even kill the woman wearing it. Others suggest that the device is a form of "enslavement" that further subjugates women. Victoria Kajja, a fellow for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stationed in Uganda, says:
The fears surrounding the victim, the act of wearing the condom in anticipation of being assaulted all represent enslavement that no woman should be subjected to.

But Ehlers counters these remarks by saying
I believe something's got to be done ... and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of rape in the world. According to a 2009 report by South Africa's Medical Research Council, as many as 28 percent of men surveyed had raped a woman or girl, with 20 percent of those admitting to a rape within the last year. Out of fear, some South African women have developed their own kinds of defensive practices, including inserting razor blades into their vaginas.

Condom with teeth
Although I can understand the rationale behind the development of this condom. and also the rationale behind the concept of women being enslaved by the anticipation of being raped... WHY IS THERE a TOOTHLESS SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT that refuses to take assault of any form against women as a serious Human Rights issue and PROSECUTE and IMPRISON any man who SEXUALLY ASSAULTS anyone including other males ! Why are the women being held responsible for their own protection when it should be the duty of the government to create laws WITH TEETH that BITE HARD.
How exactly can this thing
How exactly can this thing not be removed and still not break the skin?
And I suspect that it's just going to get women killed.
