Smartypants: Underwear That Could Save Your Life

Men may buy underpants for themselves for only 17 years – and sexy briefs might make the perfect outfit for any Pride celebration – but here is one pair that everyone will surely want to get their hands on.

A new type of underwear, created by US scientists, has electronic biosensors printed into the waistband, Reuters reports. These sensors can measure heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs.

The groundbreaking technology was developed by Prof. Joseph Wang and his team at the University of California San Diego. Funded by the US military, the underpants will initially be used by soldiers.

Prof. Wang says: 

lq.php?p=AR7x&q=Bxk This specific project involves monitoring the injury of soldiers during battlefield surgery and the goal is to develop minimally invasive sensors that can locate, in the field, and identify the type of injury. rq.png

However, the life-saving underpants – which still need quite a bit of work before they are actually worn in the field – could be useful to a wide variety of people, including the elderly, home care providers, and athletes. They might also eventually be able to test levels of alcohol in the blood.

Prof Wang explains:
