Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) Supports Gay Marriage

The New York Daily News reports that in a reversal of his original stance on the issue of same-sex marriage, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has announced that he now supports gay marriage and the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. The Senator's office issued the following statement: "It’s time. Equality is something that has always been a hallmark of America and no group should be deprived of it. New York, which has always been at the forefront on issues of equality, is appropriately poised to take a lead on this issue." Schumer originally voted "yes" on the Defense of Marriage Act, and he has been on the record supporting "civil unions" for gays and lesbians. Gay marriage advocates were overjoyed at the change of heart.
