Comprehensive Sex Ed Legislation Introduced Today
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Cal.) introduced the Responsible Education About Life Act (REAL) today, which will provide federal funding for comprehensive sex education. For the last several years, federal funding has only been available to states if they committed to abstinence-only education which excluded information about condoms or other forms of birth control. REAL has been introduced in the last three sessions of Congress but never made it out of committee, but supporters hope that the legislation will have a stronger chance with the recently-elected Democratic majorities in the House and the Senate.
