Mexico's First Openly Gay Mayoral Candidate

On Top Magazine reports that Miguel Antonio Galan, 31, has accepted the nomination of his party, the Mexican Social Democratic Party (PSD), for the mayoral ballot in Guadalajara. He is the first openly gay mayoral candidate in Mexican history. The PSD's progressive Party Platform includes the legalization of drugs and decriminalization of abortion. It currently holds 1% of the 500 seats in the lower house of Congress and none in the Senate. Galan is not expected to win the election.

Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco and the nation's second largest city, has an estimated population of 4 million people.The city is larger than both Berlin, Germany, and Paris, France, both cities with openly gay mayors.
