VisitDenmark Promotes Stereotype of Promiscuous Danish Blonde

Video StillBack in the mists of time when I was growing up (the 1970's) Danish women had a exotic, sexual image.  The hot, open,Danish blonde was a classic stereotype, second only perhaps to her Swedish cousin (for some reason Norway and Finland never had that image).   Apparently, the VisitDenmark tourist people had the same stereotype in mind when they made the video below.    The video, since pulled by the government but still available on the web, shows a young blonde woman searching for the father of her child "August."

In the video, the woman says that she is "trying to find August's father."

"We met one night a year and a half ago when you were on vacation here in Denmark.

"We met... and then decided to have a drink and, yeah, it's really embarrassing, but it's more or less what I remember.

"I don't remember where you're from or even your name."

Unsurprisingly this hasn't gone over too well in Denmark. The Economy Minister, Lene Espersen, said it "was not a very well thought-out picture of the country," and newspapers have called it "grotesque," and a "waste of taxpayers' money."

Dorte Kiilerich, manager of VisitDenmark, said she regretted any offense the video may have caused, but the intent had been to tell "a nice and sweet story about a grown-up woman who lives in a free society and accepts the consequences of her actions."

If the intent was to get publicity for Denmark it worked, although perhaps not in the way they intended.  It's also spawned parodies such as "Brooklyn Father Seeking"
