Nicole Kidman to Star as Transgender Artist

The Advocate reports that Oscar winner Nicole Kidman is set to star in The Danish Girl as the painter Einar Wegener who was the first person to undergo gender reassignment surgery. The film, also produced by Kidman, is adapted from the bestselling novel by David Ebershoff. Tomas Alfredson will direct. Alfredson is best known for directing the acclaimed Swedish vampire drama Let the Right One In. Production will begin in Denmark and other locations soon.

Einar Mogens Wegener was born as a male in 1892. He became a successful painter and married fellow artist Gerda Gottlieb. It was while modelling for Gottlieb that Wegener first discovered and then revelled in dressing up in women's clothes. In 1930, Wegener went to Germany for a series of five highly experimental surgeries in order to transform himself into Lili Elbe (pictured left). During the procedures, doctors found evidence of both male and female sex organs. Unfortunately, Elbe died in 1931 due to complications from surgery and transplant rejection.

Transphobia

"Einar Mogens Wegener was born as a male in 1892. " No. That's again a lie from the transphobic community that don't want to respect, that transsexual women ARE women and never had been male.

I call BS on that

Interesting point. I'm not sure I buy it, there are so many shades of gender and I know several people who didn't really recognize their gender until much later in life after living many years as a different gender. Specifically I know women who use statements like "I was born and lived as a man until age 40 ..." They are happy to self describe that way and I'm not about to tell them they are wrong.

So unless you were around in the 1890's to know Einar Mogens Wegner you're just applying your morals and standards to a person you've never met which in my view is never really helpful.
